چکیده

High energy gamma-ray emission has been observed above 100 MeV from at least 40 active galactic nuclei (AGN) by the EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO), and above 300 GeV gamma rays have been detected by the Whipple observatory from two AGN. The sources detected so far are \blazars" indicating a jet origin for the gamma rays. They are seen to be variable on time scales of days, and using this constraint I construct a model of gamma ray emission in blazars in which protons are accelerated in the jet and interact with radiation from the accretion disk by pion photoproduction. The emerging gamma rays result from a pair synchrotron cascade and can reproduce some of the features of the observed spectra and time variability. Using the luminosity function of gamma-ray-loud AGN, I estimate the diiuse intensity of high energy gamma rays and neutrinos from this class of AGN.

Neutrinos and gamma-rays of hadronic origin from AGN jets

We discuss the fluxes of high energy neutrinos and gamma-rays expected from AGNs if hadrons can be effectively accelerated to ultra-high energies by their relativistic jets, as currently believed. Fluxes of multi-TeV neutrinos detectable by km-scale detectors like IceCube could be expected from powerful blazars where strong accretiondisk radiation is present in the AGN cores. Gamma-ray fluxes o...

Probing dark gamma‐ray bursts with neutrinos

Highly relativistic jets are a key element of current gamma-ray burst (GRB) models, where the jet kinetic energy is converted to radiation energy at optically thin shocks. Mildly relativistic jets with smaller Lorentz factors are typically optically thick to gamma rays, and do not produce the spectacular GRB phenomenon. Jets which stall inside the progenitor similarly do not produce a GRB. Howe...

Agn Models: High-energy Emission

Astrophysical models for the high-energy emission of blazars are reviewed. Blazars ejecting relativistic radio jets at small angles to the line-of-sight are the only type of active galactic nuclei (AGN) discovered above 100 MeV. The γ-rays apparently originate in the jets which explains the absence of γ-ray pair creation attenuation. The bulk Lorentz factor of the radio jets is much smaller tha...

Production of gamma rays and neutrinos in the dark jets of the microquasar SS433

We study the spectral energy distribution of gamma rays and neutrinos in the precessing microquasar SS433 as a result of pp interactions within its dark jets. Gamma-ray absorption due to interactions with matter of the extended disk and of the star is found to be important, as well as absorption caused by the UV and mid-IR radiation from the equatorial envelopment. We analyze the range of prece...

Jet Formation in Black Hole Accretion Systems I: Theoretical Unification Model

Two types of relativistic jets are suggested to form near accreting black holes: a potentially ultrarelativistic Poynting-dominated jet and a Poynting-baryon jet. One source of jet matter is electron-positron pair production, which is driven by neutrino annihilation in GRBs and photon annihilation in AGN and x-ray binaries. GRB Poynting-dominated jets are also loaded by electron-proton pairs by...
